Horsham Youth were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the first hurdle by Tooting And Mitcham United Youth but the scoreline of 1-4 hardly paints a reflection of the match and the young Hornets can take away plenty of positives to help them bounce back in the season ahead.

Horsham started brightly and got their passing game going early on and this resulted in an early chance for Josh Clack but his shot went just wide into the side netting. Tooting responded and won a free kick from outside the area which saw them take the lead after the effort took a massive deflection to give keeper Dominic Burchell no chance.

The Hornets didn't panic and continued to play good football and it came as no surprise when they eventually levelled the scores ten minutes before the break when Patrick O'Sullivan slipped his shot under the Tooting keeper. The visitors came straight back into the game as Horsham seemed to take their foot off the gas and Burchell was quickly off his line to save at the feet of the onrushing Tooting striker. A couple more chances were missed before they were gifted the lead on the stroke of half time after Burchell failed to clear the ball from a corner and the United forward did not miss an easy opportunity.

The second half started evenly with both sides looking edgy but, after 55 minutes, Tooting were given valuable breathing space with a third goal after a long through ball led to a United player heading over Burchell on the edge of the box and into an empty net.

Far from the game been dead and buried for Horsham, they responded well but it was not going to be their day and with one effort cleared off the line and the woodwork struck twice it was the visitors who had the final say with the last goal of the game giving Horsham only enough time to take the restart before the final whistle sounded.

After the match, three players from Horsham Youth were invited to trails at Reading F.C. by the club's Recruitment Officer Steve Shorey, who was in attendance at the game.
