Horsham Youth eased through to the Second Round of the County Cup by
defeating Hastings United Youth 5-1 in a tie that was played at
Southwater Village Centre due to Broadbridge Heath being unavailable.
It was the Hornets who made a fast start, putting their East Sussex
counterparts under pressure from the first minute when Patrick
O'Sullivan broke through United's defence only to see his shot rebound
off the post. Horsham won some early corners and had the visitors'
defence wobbling as they just managed to clear the danger.
Eventually the breakthrough came after James Callaby found himself one
on one with the Keeper and a powerful shot gave the Hornets the lead.
Hastings came back into the game but any problems were dealt well by
George Magnus at the heart of the Horsham back four, supported well by
his central partner Rob Cook.
The second goal came after a fine run from full back Lewis Reeves,
whose pass found O'Sullivan who whipped in a pinpoint cross that
picked out Andy Miller who made no mistake from close range. Horsham
now got in to top gear and started to control the game with Adam
Hutchings and Miller bossing centre midfield. The
third goal of the afternoon came
on the half hour mark came with Chris Copestake on the left
flank this time providing the killer ball for Callaby who again kept
his composure in front of goal.
Hutchings went close a minute later but his fierce shot hit the bar
but the Hornets skipper did not have to wait long to get his name
among the scorers when, soon after, he scored following a corner.
Horsham, now four goals to the good, started to relax and this cost
them when United striker Kidman broke through the defence and finished
well past Dominic Burchell in the Hornets goalmouth to give the
visitors a glimmer of hope at the break.
Any thoughts of a comeback were soon extinguished when Horsham won a
corner in the opening minute and Magnus ghosted in to the box to claim
the Hornets' fifth goal. To their credit, Hastings worked hard as they
were determined not to cave in to a big score and Burchell was twice
called upon to make good saves as they looked for another goal of
their own.
Horsham made all three of their substitutions midway through the half
and reshuffled the pack after an injury to Magnus meant Alex Spooner
moved into the centre of defence and Charlie Abrahart took over at
left back. Further chances did come with O'Sullivan, who had caused
the United defence problems throughout the game, unlucky not to add to
the tally and Copestack going close but his effort struck the side
netting.
Jack Petersen, who had replaced the hardworking Jamie May, looked
sharp on the right flank on his debut and fellow substitute Max White
headed in what appeared to be a perfectly good goal only to see it
ruled out by the linesman's flag.
Horsham will face a home tie against either Rottingdean Village or
Seddlescombe next month.
