Even though Horsham conceded an early opening goal,
Worthing didn't have the game all their own way. With
the Hornets team spirit high, the lads pulled together
and defended like Trojans. Changes were made to the
squad, with illness ruling out both central midfielders
Jack Surlis and Conor Brievik. This meant a debut for
Piers McDermott who played alongside Dean O'Keefe in the
middle of the park. Timi Ojo and Zac Comber were lively
up front and were unlucky on several occasions not to
level the score. The midfield worked tirelessly with
good performances from O'Keefe, McDermott, Ryan Hallett
and Pedro Silva. Horsham 'keeper Jonny Burfend made some
crucial saves at the right times to frustrate the Rebels
and was protected well by the back four of Anthony Jupp,
Luke Taylor, Darian Clay and Alex Kingdon.
After the break Worthing still piled on the pressure
and, as legs began to tire, Horsham made changes with
Ryan Kirkland replacing Silva and Jordan Baxter for
McDermott. The Rebels continued to look for a second
goal to put the game safe but again were stopped in
their tracks by the impressive Burfiend. In the last
part of the game Horsham pushed extra players forward as
they hunted an equaliser, leaving them open to the
counter attack and, in the last five minutes, The Rebels
were able to break through to score twice in quick
succession to make the final score 3-0.
Horsham travelled home with a defeat but not downhearted
as they were competitive and believe they are improving
every game. Next game up for the Hornets is an away trip
to last year's champions Burgess Hill on Monday 17th
October.
On a sad note, Worthing President Morty Hollis had a
very nasty fall when putting the floodlights on and
fractured his hip. As many of you know, Morty has been
very accommodating during our groundshare problems and
everyone at Horsham Youth wish him a very speedy
recovery and hope to see him at the return game.
