In
a season of ups and downs for the under 18s, this was a demoralising
defeat in terms of the score but there were positives to be
taken as the possession was shared in the second half and both
teams probably had about the same amount of chances, but is
was the Hillians who showed their class with clinical finishes
whereas the Hornets were often too slow to get the shot off
when chances arose.
Horsham actually took an early lead after 3 minutes through
Dean O'Keefe but, playing against the wind, were soon under
pressure from the home side. Two quick goals around the half
hour mark put Hill in front and a needless foul in the area
gave them a third goal from the penalty spot before half time.
The Hornets lost captain Darian Clay and Connor Brievik both
to injury in the first half and it was experience that they
could not afford to be without against a strong Hillians team.
Horsham could again have opened the scoring at the start of
the second half but failed to take the chance and another two
quick goals in succession put Burgess Hill into a 5-1 lead.
Both sides played some good football, keeping the ball on the
grass in difficult windy conditions, and the Hornets had a number
of half chances and free-kicks in decent areas but never really
threatened whereas every attack at the other end seemed to end
up in the back of the net as the Hillians players were given
to much freedom in key areas.
The final score ended 8-1 and Horsham will need to get to the
training ground on Thursday to put in some hard work and rebuild
confidence ahead of the next match.
