The first round of the League Cup saw Horsham travel
away to Eastbourne to play Polegate Grasshoppers United
from League 2.
Horsham played some very neat football in the first
half, keeping the ball well and limiting Polegate to
very few chances. The centre midfield partnership of
Captain Alex Parsons and Harry Smith worked well with
the two breaking up opposition play and creating much of
Horsham's attacking play. Despite the scoreline, the
Polegate goalkeeper had a fine game, making some smart
saves, and it was not until the 35th minute when the
deadlock was broken when Zak Comber shot hard and low
through the 'keeper's legs and the young Hornets went
into the break 1-0 up.

With Lewis Blaney having very little to do in the
Horsham goal, it was time to introduce Aldridge for his
debut. Shortly after half time a delivery from the right
from full-back Waller saw a fine controlled side foot
volley from Smith double Horsham's lead. Stanley Rice
then went close after spinning in the box but fired
wide.
Polegate then had a great chance to get back in the
match, when the normally reliable Jupp and Gander at the
centre of Horsham's defence allowed the Polegate forward
to latch onto a through ball. However, Aldridge came out
diving low and bravely at the forward's feet to make a
fine save. Unfortunately both players took knocks in the
challenge with neither able to continue.
Following this scare Horsham soon got back to playing
some fine interchanging passes, with Hole and then
Garman making great runs down the left flank, and it was
from this position that Garman cut in to fire the third
on 53 minutes. Comber was then on hand to calmly
slot the ball into the keeper's left hand corner in the
61st minute.
In the 70th minute, Ollie Clarke beat his defender down
Horsham's right before delivering a delightful ball
across the 6 yard box where Rice was on hand to add the
finish and score Horsham's 5th. The game was wrapped up
when Garman scored his second on 76 minutes, following
some delightful football by Horsham and culminating in a
killer pass from Rice. Not on the score sheet today but
Man of the Match went to Jake Legrange whose energy and
constant closing down typified Horsham's display.
