Horsham U16s welcomed
Lancing Rangers to Southwater Village Centre in this 3rd
round County Cup tie. Horsham began in a very attacking
formation and it was not long before Greg Gander went
close for the home side with a powerful 25 yard shot
that the Lancing 'keeper did well to keep out and,
shortly after, Zak Comber saw his effort ruled out for
offside.
The Hornets kept up the
pressure with Ollie Clarke running on to a long through
ball from Alex Parsons and shooting just wide of the
post. However, with only 10 minutes played, Horsham had
to make changes with Jake Waller coming on for the
injured Clarke. Horsham continued to press hard and
enjoyed much of the possession. Despite the atrocious
conditions, some attractive passing movements led to
further opportunities for Comber, Harry Smith and then
Jake Legrange, whose strike hit the woodwork.
Lancing had their first
real chance on 15 minutes but, after being awarded a
free-kick just outside the box, 'keeper Lewis Blaney’s
safe hands denied the visitors an opening goal. Tom
Killner-Brown and Harry Garman came on after 32 minutes
and had an immediate impact with Ben Collier firing just
wide after latching on to Killner-Brown cross. However,
the first breakthrough came on 38 minutes when Garman
darted down the left wing and squared the ball to the
waiting Comber, who netted coolly.
H/T: Horsham 1 Lancing
Rangers 0
Dominating the second
half, in spite of a progressively deteriorating pitch,
the tenacious Horsham team managed to play some really
attractive football that led to many attempts being
thwarted by a brave and determined Lancing keeper. At 63
minutes Horsham were awarded a clear penalty when Smith
cut into the penalty area from the left wing and was
about to unleash another strike when he was brought
down. Waller stepped up to the mark and calmly converted
the spot kick.
Horsham notched up their
3rd goal on 67 minutes; Connor Cushing made a
scintillating run down the right and found the excellent
Stanley Rice with his cross, who then skipped past the
Lancing defence before slotting the ball through for
Killner-Brown to finish. Only minutes later Gander had
another screaming strike on goal from distance and, this
time, found the net.
Horsham continued to push
forward with some great interplay that saw the ever
reliable Collier and Anthony Jupp supporting the
attacks. The young Hornets got their reward with a place
in the Quarter Finals when, in injury time, Killner-Brown
claimed his second after battling to net a delightful
Garman through ball and put the result beyond doubt.
