The
first match of 2012 found Horsham U16s travelling to Hove Riverdale
for a County Cup quarter final tie. An early strike by Hove
forced a save by Lewis Blaney in the Horsham goal and that was
immediately followed by a counter attack from the visitors,
ended when Harry Smith’s drilled shot was stopped by the 'keeper.
Horsham stepped up the pressure and were rewarded with much
of the possession but it was Hove who managed to find the breakthrough
when a throw-in took an unfortunate deflection into the back
of the net.
Hove quickly doubled their lead after pouncing on a Horsham
defensive error and the match then became a heated battle as
Horsham pushed forward, trying to close the deficit. However,
minutes before half-time Hove scored their 3rd goal.

The second half continued to see both teams battling but, despite
the tenacious Jake Legrange going close, the Hove defence remained
strong and Horsham failed to capitalise. An unfortunate sending
off reduced Horsham to 10 men but neither side converted their
chances, resulting in a disappointing result for the young Hornets
and their first defeat in almost two years.
