A brace each from Rueben Selby and Alex Moore saw
Horsham Youth U15s ease into round two of the League cup
on a blustery day at home to Worthing Minors.
The home side made a slow start and, had it not been for
the alert Tom Auston who made two smart saves in the
first quarter of an hour, the final result may have been
a lot different. Having said that, though, Horsham did
have a good opportunity to take the lead after just
three minutes when a flicked header sent Callum Nash
clean through, only for his shot to be well saved by the
visiting 'keeper.
Selby was causing all sorts of problems down the left
flank before the breakthrough came after eighteen
minutes when Jack Norris released Nash down the right
and his cross come shot was misjudged by the Worthing
'keeper who could only help the ball into his own net.
It was 2-0, four minutes later, as Selby finally got his
reward for an impressive start to the game, twisting and
turning before chipping the 'keeper from a tight angle.
To their credit, Worthing kept battling and almost
pulled a goal back on the half hour when a long
clearance was latched onto by the Minors' striker but
his lobbed effort cleared both ‘keeper Auston and the
Horsham crossbar.

The second half was more straight forward for the Young
Hornets as they began to dominate possession. They got
off to the perfect start when a corner from Andrew
Roberts was headed back across goal, giving Moore the
easiest of tasks to tap in for 3-0. The game then got a
little ill tempered, not helped when the League
appointed referee was forced to leave the field with a
back injury, and replaced by a spectator (who was a
qualified referee).
Horsham kept their concentration, though, and made it
4-0 after fifty three minutes when Selby was sent
through by Moore before coolly finishing from just
inside the box. Four minutes later the game was well and
truly over as, this time, Glenn Johnson released Moore
who did the rest, making it 5-0. Further chances were
created and only some fine goalkeeping kept out shots
from Aaron Pyzer and Joe Petchey before a brilliant
double save denied Will Kerr from adding to the score
sheet.
