Horsham had to twice come from behind to see off a
resilient Worthing Minors Youth, eventually running out
4-2 winners in their second round League Cup clash. The
young Hornets should have been a goal up inside the
first minute when, straight from the kick-off, a
powerful run down the right from Rueben Selby saw his
cross find an unmarked Harry Lee, only for his first
time shot to be hit tamely at the goalkeeper. Horsham’s
early dominance counted for nothing, however, as after
nine minutes the home side broke away and after some
neat football their midfielder cut in from the right and
rifled home a left foot shot into the roof of the net.
Chances came and went for Horsham, the best going to
Callum Nash who, much like Lee, hit his shot straight at
the 'keeper after being put clean through by Andrew
Roberts. The equaliser finally came on seventeen
minutes, when a corner from Roberts was headed in by
Alex Moore. Despite further pressure and some excellent
chances, Will Kerr hitting a post from a quickly taken
corner by Roberts, Nash shooting wide when well placed,
Moore heading just over from a Roberts free kick and the
'keeper making a great save from a Jordan Walser shot
inside the box, the teams went in at the interval all
square.
H/T Worthing Minors 1 Horsham 1
It was a fairly even start to the second half, with both
sides trying to gain control of the game. However, some
sloppy defending and a deflected shot from the edge of
the penalty area saw the home side take the lead for a
second time, just five minutes in.
Horsham then piled on the pressure, Nash again finding
himself clean through, only for his shot to be fired
straight at the 'keeper. Roberts was then denied by a
full length diving save before the equaliser eventually
came on fifty five minutes when another powerful run
from Selby saw him go clear down the right and squeeze
his shot just inside the near post. Ross Williams then
had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead for the
first time in the game but, once again, the Minors
goalkeeper produced a good save. At the other end,
Worthing were still causing problems on the break and
Tom Auston had to be on his toes to keep out a well
taken free kick, pushing the ball onto the post with his
right hand.
The visitors finally took the lead, though, when Roberts
was upended on the edge of the box and the resulting
free-kick was curled into the top corner with pace by
Nash. Kerr again hit the woodwork with a rasping left
foot drive before the game was finally killed with a
minute left when some neat interplay between Kerr and
Roberts sent the latter clean through and he made no
mistake with a cool, left foot finish.
