Horsham Youth U15s got off to a frustrating start to the
new season as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Highdown
Saints Youth.
The young Hornets made a positive start, taking the game
to their opponents from the off, and after just six
minutes they had taken the lead. A through ball from
Andrew Roberts sent Callum Nash clear but he was upended
on the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick,
Roberts’ deflected shot eluded the best efforts of the
Saints 'keeper, finding the back of the net. It was all
one way traffic after that, with opportunities regularly
being created. Rueben Selby first produced a great run
and cross before midfielder Will Kerr then saw two
efforts from distance go just wide. Another fine through
ball from the impressive Roberts found Nash again in
space, but he failed to get any contact on the ball.
It was not until the twenty sixth minute that Highdown
offered their first real threat, as a long clearance
down field was latched onto by the Saints striker who
fired over the crossbar. To their credit, the home side
finished what seemed to be a short first half of 33
minutes the stronger, and from a well delivered corner,
they scrambled home their equaliser from just inside the
six yard box.

There was a more even start to the second half with both
sides having early opportunities to take the lead,
however it was Horsham who started to take control of
the game and creating the better chances. After fifty
seven minutes a good run and shot from Roberts was well
saved by the home 'keeper and, then a minute later, Joe
Petchey fired just wide from a corner. Nash then
probably had the best chance of the second half but his
point blank effort was again well saved by the Saints
‘keeper.
Further chances came and went, with Alex Moore heading
against the crossbar, and an inswinging corner from Nash
also hitting the woodwork. At the other end Tom Auston
made a good save from another well delivered Saints
corner. Kerr struck another effort just wide after a
good turn inside the box and further pressure from
Horsham produced more dangerous attacks from set pieces,
but the breakthrough just would not come.
