Horsham began this match
with Seaford Wasps slowly, with a chance for the visitors
coming early in the game but Horsham 'keeper Joe Moss
saw the danger and came out quickly, closing his legs
and standing firm to deflect the shot away to safety.
Liam Clarke put Horsham
ahead on eleven minutes after bursting through down the
left and steering his right footed curled shot in off
the far post from a tight angle. This settled the lads
and Finn Bigg followed up two minutes later with a
powerfully hit shot but just over the bar. These two
then combined to produce a good save by the Seaford
'keeper from Clarke after Bigg had picked him out with a
nicely slotted pass.
Seaford bounced back but
their break was mopped up by Jack and Lewis Reeves and
the ball was cleared strongly all the way through and
over the Seaford defence for Clarke to pounce for his
second with a deft lob after allowing the ball to bounce
just once; a very well taken goal. Thirty minutes gone
and Horsham had Seaford pretty much pinned down in their
penalty area but couldn’t find a way through for their
third. Bigg broke away but scuffed his low hit shot and
this was easily taken by the 'keeper. However, no-one
could stop him with a fine individual goal after
accelerating past the first man, beating the second and,
on reaching the by-line, finishing from an acute angle
across goal and in off the back post in similar fashion
to Clark’s first.
H/T Seaford Wasps 0
Horsham 3
Horsham brought on their
three subs for Clark, Hugo Cowan and Dan Cusdin but were
rocked by a quick Seaford goal after never really
clearing the ball away in defence and this gave the
Seaford lads' legs some new energy. Horsham stuck to
their guns and sent Bigg on his way down the left and,
with some superb footwork, he beat three defenders to
cross from the by-line right across the face of goal but
found no-one coming in to finish, which was a shame.
Horsham were picking up
the pace again with some nice quick passing and this
lead to their fourth goal by George Matthews with a
beautifully lofted strike from distance over the
advancing 'keeper. Seaford were still pressing and
looked dangerous on the break but found Louis Lewis in
good form at the centre of Horsham's defence. Tom
Summerfield was also enjoying his more advanced role at
right midfield in this half and went on a great run
through several players before laying off a pass when
perhaps a more selfish approach could have brought him a
goal.
He had, however, clearly
learned from this just before the hour with a sweetly
struck low shot from just inside the area for Horsham’s
5th of the day. This was followed up with his second not
long after; another great strike from the edge of the
box this time high and hitting first one post then the
other before going in. Charlie Belton was also causing
problems for the Seaford defence down the left and he
tricked his way through with nice footwork, squaring the
ball to Ali Kerr outside the area who unleashed a
piledriver of a shot which was bound for the roof of the
net before the Seaford ‘keeper managed to get his
fingertips to it and push it over the bar for a really
fine save.
Seaford scored from a
penalty which turned out to be the last kick of the game
after Kerr protected his face by blocking a shot with
his hands but Horsham were always comfortable running
out winners 6–2 to take the lads to the top of the
league.
