John Maggs wasn't
getting carried away with last night's demolition of Shoreham, instead
saying that it was the kind of result he would expect against County
League opposition. The hosts' victory in last season's Brighton
Charity Cup semi-final was a distant memory at the end of a 90 minutes
in which the Hornets might have doubled their score while comfortably
stifling the Musslemen's own attacking threat.
"It was a bumpy old pitch,"
reflected Maggs, "but I thought we played some tidy football out
there. We got off to a slow start but our defence was excellent and
Rob Tolfrey's probably only had one save to make all night. It doesn't
always work out that way but it was the sort of result we should be
getting against sides from this live and, once we got going, it was
pretty much all over. To be fair, Claude's got himself a hat-trick
without really playing well and, on another day, we might have scored
ten. But it gave us a good sweat and we've got to be pleased with
that."
Maggs was boosted by the news
that Lee Carney and Gary Charman would be available for selection for
the match at Middle Road while his captain, Sam Page, was declared fit
to start despite twisting his knee in Tuesday's training session. "It
was a bit of a surprise to me when I got the calls from Lee and Gary,
to be honest, but I thought both of them did well and suffered no
ill-effects. It was a bonus to be able to get another 80 minutes out
of Sam, too, and I thought that Jack Page did well when he came on".
Maggs was also quick to praise
the contribution of trialist Jack Lyons who capped an impressive first
appearance for the club with the game's fourth goal in the 5-0 romp.
"He linked up very well with Lee Carney in the midfield and created
his goal brilliantly when he threaded the ball through about seven
players to give Lee an easy finish.
Our fitness levels were very
good and we managed to score a couple of late goals because of that.
Having said that, Russell and Mark picked up a couple of knocks so
we'll have to see if we can play them on Saturday".
