Horsham
will name an unchanged line-up for Tuesday's testing trip to
Sutton United as both sides look to build on opening day
goalless draws. The highly rated
Us were held to a surprise stalemate at Premier Division
newcomers Concord Rangers on Saturday, a match in which our
former captain Sam Page reportedly experienced something of a
shaky debut, twice escaping expulsion for dismissible
offences, but John Maggs is in no doubt that Paul Doswell's side
will start the match as favourites.
"There
were a lot of surprise results about on Saturday," he said,
"Billericay beating Tonbridge was probably the pick but I
think a lot of people would have expected Sutton to beat
Concord Rangers. They look to have a class squad and have
signed a number of quality players over the summer so I'd
still expect them to be one of the clubs to be competing for
automatic promotion."
Maggs was happy with his side's own goalless start and praised
his players' fitness and aerial strength as they shared the
points with a side that had recorded a league double over the
Hornets last season. "I was fairly happy with the result. We
put all our energy into the game, defended well and looked
quite solid. I was delighted with our delivery from free-kicks
and, although we won the majority of headers without making
any of them count, I'm pleased that our hard work on the
training ground looks to be paying off. We were obviously
looking to get off to a winning start, after waiting so long
to kick off on our own ground, but I think it was clear that
Aveley came for a draw as they weren't particularly
adventurous. Yes it was 0-0, and neither 'keeper was really
stretched, but it certainly wasn't a bore draw and the
supporters' reaction at the end was good. They could see what
we're trying to do so that was a positive sign."
With no injuries to report after
the weekend, Maggs may have to omit one player from his
travelling party to accommodate Pat Harding. Last season's
leading scorer was a notable absentee from Saturday's squad as
he struggled to shake off the effects of knee and ankle damage
suffered pre-season but is reportedly ready for a return to
action and is likely to be named among the substitutes.
Prior to Saturday's big
kick-off, Sutton enjoyed a decent pre-season campaign and were
unbeaten against a Crystal Palace XI, a strong Southampton
side, Worthing, Met Police and Blue Square South Havant &
Waterlooville and have added some quality signings to last
year's squad that reached the play-off semi-finals. Page,
Craig Dundas, Richard Jolly, Simon Downer and Kennedy Adjei
are among the more notable summer recruits but Horsham
supporters will recall that Sutton were beaten 1-0 at Gorings
Mead at the same stage of last season's campaign when they
were, again, justifiably tipped to do well.
Maggs is predicting a similar
result this time, with "probably one goal enough to win it".
