Hornets
chairman Kevin Borrett expressed his deep disappointment and frustration at a
run of team performances that have seen the senior team crash out of their
three main cup competitions at the first hurdle, for the first time since
2003. Commenting on recent performances he said "the frustration of Horsham
supporters at the recent performances of the team is totally understandable
and quite justified. I myself am deeply disappointed that this season we are
already out of three core competitions (FA Cup, FA Trophy and Sussex Senior
Cup) that would give us all something in which to cheer the players and bring
additional revenue to the club”.
He admitted that he had not expected to be in such a position in his first
year as Chairman but acknowledged that "fairytale starts to a change of
leadership are not usually the norm" and agreed he was in something of a hot
seat at the present point in time ! Kevin went on to confirm that "the
Players, Management and Board all recognise that the results are simply not
good enough, lessons needed to be learnt and acted upon”.
He added "if that means changes are required to refresh things, I have no
doubts that the management team would do what was necessary. The mood on the
team coach back from visiting Barton Rovers was very sombre and, indeed,
needed to be as the club reflected on the very poor recent run". However, the
Chairman was quick to point out that "the recent shortcomings were not down to
any one individual" and rejected any criticism that this was the case. He
noted that certain players and members of management had come in for public
criticism in this regard which was unhelpful. "The current squad has huge
potential but, individually and collectively, members are not coming up to the
very high standards expected by fans and other interested parties following
the results of recent years”.
He added that "decisions by match officials, which so often can turn a game,
have not gone our way on a number of key occasions against Tooting & Mitcham,
Bognor Regis and Barton Rovers in each of the cup competitions" but, whilst
this was an element of the overall performance, he stopped short of suggesting
this excused the shortcomings of the team on the pitch. He thanked all fans
for the wide interest and constructive debate on the Club website forum
following Tuesday night’s game”.
