John Maggs tested out a
new formation in his side’s latest pre-season outing against Godalming
Town. With Mark Knee injured and Russell Eldridge unavailable, Jack
Page joined up with Anthony Acheampong and Sam Page to make up a back
three whilst Steve Davies was played between the impressive Jack Lyons
and Lee Carney in a five man midfield and Claude Seanla replaced Ben
Andrews in attack after overcoming an illness that kept him out of the
Hornets' last 2 outings. It proved successful as Horsham beat The G’s
2-1 to make it four wins on the trot.
The Hornets began the game
the better side, which would have pleased John Maggs, as the last few
games he has seen his side on the back foot on the first ten minutes.
Pat Harding ran onto a Carney pass and, with a defender closing in, he
unleashed a fierce right footed shot from the edge of the box that
flew narrowly over the crossbar into the training pitch behind. The
next chance saw Harding turn provider as he ran onto another Carney
ball, getting the better of the G’s right back and passed the ball
back across the box. Seanla was unable to get a shot on target so laid
the ball back to Davies
who fired low and hard into the bottom left hand corner of the goal
from the edge of the box.
Horsham’s lead didn’t last very long, however, as a mistake from Sam Page
saw him play the ball back across goal but his brother didn’t read the
pass and it was intercepted by Brahim Eloumani
who skipped on into the box and produced a confident low shot which
beat Rob Tolfrey and sailed into the bottom right hand corner of the
goal.
The Hornets looked very shaky and indecisive in defence and they were
lucky to still be level after Godalming’s next two chances. The first
allowed the ball to sail across the box as Jack Page missed his kick
and the G’s winger got a touch which took the ball onto the crossbar
and pinged back into play with Richard Taylor collecting the ball and
having his shot cleared off the line by Acheampong. Tolfrey nearly
repeated his blunder that allowed Redhill to score last weekend when
he came rushing out of his goal and was beaten to the ball by the
large centre forward who was sent racing towards goal. Clearly on his
wrong foot, the striker took too much time to take his shot and
checked back, hoping to pass it into an empty net, but his attempted
chip was straight at Tolfrey who caught it at chest height.
Horsham had the crossbar to thank for the scores being level at half
time when Eloumani’s shot rattled against the frame of the goal just
before the whistle was blown for half time. Maggs would have been
disappointed with his side’s defensive display but grateful, perhaps,
that the Hornets were on level terms at the break.
H/T Godalming Town 1 – 1 Horsham
Davies nearly began the second half as he had the first as he was
inches from regaining the Hornets the lead. His drive would have found
the bottom corner had it not been for a superb diving save from
substitute keeper, Gary Aulsberry, who pushed the ball behind for a
corner with his fingertips and the resulting cross was headed wide by
Acheampong. The visitors' uncertainty in defence continued as Dennis
was allowed the time to gain control of the ball but his shot was wide
of the mark.
However, a corner from Carney found Andrews
towering above the G’s defence to open his account for Horsham by
heading them back into the lead. Horsham were showing good link up
play and great understanding between the midfield and the defence now
and Carney's curling pass found Harding who raced onto the ball to
send in a shot that just skimmed the top of the crossbar.
The last chance of the game fell to Horsham. Harding sent Tony
Nwachukwu racing into the box and, when he played the ball across
goal, it was cleared out to Gary Charman whose shot was blocked. The
deflection found its way back to Harding, unmarked, but his shot was
charged down by Aulsberry who had produced some fine saves in his 45
minute performance.
The second half was a very quiet affair, neither team having many
chances, but it was the Hornets who were able to steal a winner. The
result was probably harsh on Godalming who enjoyed a fine first half
but were unable to beat Tolfrey for a second time. The Hornets now
travel to Walton and Hersham on Tuesday night to continue their pre
season preparations.
