Horsham Youth completed the League double over neighbours Horsham YMCA
with a resounding 7-0 victory at The Atspeed Stadium. Horsham made
just one change from the team that played so well the previous week
with Michael Dale replacing Jay Brynin in centre midfield and it was
Dale
who opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he rose
unchallenged to powerfully head in from a corner. A shell shocked YM
nearly conceded another straight away but Horsham striker Elliot
Hawkes let them off the hook as he missed his chance with just the
goalkeeper to beat. But the Hornets kept up the pressure and, in the 10th
minute, a superb strike from 15 year old full back George
Magnus
doubled the advantage. Pat Surlis went close minutes later as Horsham
threatened to run riot as they dominated all over the park in the
early stages. Slowly the visitors began to find a bit more of the ball
but they never looked like breaking through the solid Hornets defence
with centre backs Niall O'Hagen and Tom May on top form. Ten minutes
before the break Horsham made it 3-0 with Dale setting up the lively
Tony
Nwachukwu
who fired in a brilliant goal from a tight angle. Matt
Whiteford was unlucky right on the stroke of half time as his shot hit
the post and ran along the line into the YM 'keeper's hands as the
Hornets went into the interval in jubilant mood.
The second half started in the same way as the first with Horsham
striking with an early goal, this time courtesy of left winger
Surlis
who, not for the first time this season, showed what an excellent
finisher he can be. On the right, Whiteford was enjoying teasing the
YM
defence and at times pulled them apart, excellently supported
by full back Adam Hutchings. And it was
Whiteford
who made it 5-0
as he broke into the box and fired home from close range. With the
game safe, Horsham brought on Brynin on the left to replace Surlis
and another under 16 player, Darren James, came on for the hardworking
Hawkes. With goalkeeper Tom Baxter enjoying a well deserved quite
evening, the night after his excellent debut for the first team, the
Hornets continued to press but also showed their patience at times
with their build up play with Dan Hutchings pulling the strings in the
centre of midfield. Into the last fifteen minutes,
Nwachukwu
struck
again with the Hornets' sixth goal. Horsham made their final
substitution with Karl Threadgold replacing Dale and the youngster was
soon into the action. Fittingly, five minutes from time the final word
went to
Nwachukwu
who once again showed his class as he completed a
well deserved hat trick with the Hornets seventh and final goal of the
evening.
