Horsham
Youth came from behind to claim three points in this league game with
plenty at stake. As well as being a massive local derby, a lot of the
players attend the same college and this was also a bottom of the
table clash with YM desperate to win to go level on points with the
Hornets.
Horsham
recalled Dean Wright to the team and he played alongside on loan
Gillingham striker Ben Bissett up front. These two both caused a
couple of early scares for the hosts as Horsham attempted to to put
their opponents under early pressure. But in the eighth minute it was
the Gorings Mead outfit who went ahead after defender Harry Pleece
failed to clear and the ball fell nicely to the YM striker who struck
his effort low into the bottom corner past Hornets 'keeper Tom Baxter.
Instead of lifting the Horsham players into a fightback, being a goal
down seemed to leave them shell shocked and it was YM who looked more
likely to add to their lead but were thwarted by good defending from
centre backs Niall O'Hagen and Tom May. When Horsham did go on the
attack their shape was disjointed and chances were few and manager
Ivan Raby was glad to get his team into the break only a goal behind.
The
interval gave a chance for fresh instructions to the players and a
more determined Horsham team started the second half looking a lot
better and, within five minutes, they moved the ball out to the
wingers Pat Surlis and Matt Whiteford who were both now starting to go
past the fullbacks and have players to pick out in the box. Horsham
made a change in the back four bringing on Under 16 player George
Magnus to replace Pleece and as the half wore on it seemed certain
there were going to be more goals but who was going to score the vital
next goal was not clear as YM were looking dangerous on the counter
attack. Midway through the second half the large travelling contingent
at last had something to cheer about as Andy Whittingham set up Pat
Surlis who got himself into the box to level the score at 1-1. Now the
Hornets had YM under real pressure with the centre midfield pairing of
Jay Brynin and Dan Hutchings showing class in the centre of the park
as they broke up danger and started attacks for the Hornets.
With
twelve minutes left the winner came from a piece of direct football as
a long drop kick from Baxter was quickly put under control by Bissett
who, within a flash, was in the box and fired a unstoppable effort
past the keeper to send the majority of the 132 crowd into a wild
celebration at Gorings Mead. Minutes later the Hornets should have
wrapped the game up when Bissett set up Wright but his shot was saved
by the keeper. Wright was replaced by Matt Dingle for the final
minutes but it was the home side who finished stronger as they started
to throw everything at Horsham and an effort in injury time from 25
yards out was brilliantly saved by Baxter to finally break the hearts
of the YM players.
