For the second week in a
row a Youth team game was watched by a crowd that would have made
Horsham YMCA
rub their hands together as both teams started off at a frantic pace
with Godalming's more physical long ball game having the edge for the
first quarter. It took Horsham a good while to settle and to start
playing their football however once they did the game changed and they
took control for long periods.
Their first goal game via a delightful curling shot from Dean Wright
who, positioned on the left hand edge of the penalty box curled a
looping shot over and around the brightly coloured hair of Godalming
keeper Sam Churchman. It was a delightful finish and it enabled Horsham
to control the game up to half time although they might rue the number
of missed chances they created in future games.
The second half started as the first half ended although slowly
Godalming were beginning to create on the break and they had a golden
opportunity via a one on one that Tom Baxter in the Horsham goal did
well to save and you felt that for all their football a second goal
was required to finish Godalming off .
More Horsham chances came and went as their finishing from inside the
box let them down however the second goal never came and on (approx...i
don't wear a watch ) 75 minutes Godalming forced an equaliser and it
was certainly game on. During the next 5 minutes the game went up
another notch and Horsham's football became frantic as you sensed
their were losing their grip on the game and at the same time the
Godalming bench urged their team on to seize the moment.
Any hopes however that Godalming had were dashed as a loose back pass
allowed the Horsham striker to toe end the ball up and over the keeper
as he raced off his line ,he did get a hand to the ball as it then
bounced via the crossbar over the line (I think.... as it was one of
those Geoff Hurst moments). There weren't concerted complaints from the
Godalming team however that could just be, to their credit that unlike
our Premier ship players the players at this level have a little more
respect for the officials......
The goal knocked the stuffing out of Godalming and the game was
reasonably comfortable for Horsham up to the final whistle as they
progressed successfully to the next round..... leaving the door open
for the first team to follow suit on Saturday 15th against Arundel in
their own cup game
