Horsham Under 16s started their 2007-08 campaign with a trip to
Ferring, the home of Worthing United 'B'. The home team started the game
confidently and showed little respect for a Horsham side who were last
year’s league champions. With some uncompromising tackling and
excellent goalkeeping they managed to thwart a number of Horsham
attacks. However, Alexander Green, Matthew Rance, Adam Hutchings and
Patrick O’Sullivan all went close as the away team began to dominate
the second period of the first half.
The few attacks that were mounted by the home side were quickly and
efficiently snuffed out by the strong Horsham defence of Joseph
Giacomelli, Ben Mulcahy, Anthony Dumbrill and Sam Lee. Goalkeeper
Dominic Burchell was also in confident form and was very commanding in
his six yard box, catching crosses and corners with aplomb.
The half ended goalless but it was only a matter of time before
Horsham’s superior pace and movement paid off.
The second half was only five minutes old when O’Sullivan deftly
side-footed home a cross after some skilful interplay between
Hutchings and Jordan Ruff. Within minutes George Magnus was on hand at
the near past to volley in a cross from Mulcahy.
With just fifteen minutes of the second half having passed Horsham
were three up after a goal bound free-kick from Ruff was helped in by
the alert Magnus. Magnus completed his twenty minute hat-trick when he
headed a cross from Lee past the stranded Worthing keeper.
Although Worthing defended with great tenacity they could not
withstand the constant wave of attacks that Horsham heaped upon them.
Theo Mefsut and Darren James worked tirelessly down the flanks and
made sure that a good supply of crosses was maintained.
The visitors’ fifth goal came from the ever-dangerous Green who picked
up the ball on the half way line and, after beating two defenders,
drove home a low shot. The best was saved for last. Green rolled a
short free-kick to Hutchings and the Horsham captain rifled in a
rapier like shot that gave the home goalkeeper no chance.
This was very satisfactory start to the season and all members of the
team should have been pleased with their efforts and performances.
