Horsham Youth Under 16’s
strolled into the quarter finals of the County Cup with a comfortable
7 – 0 victory over Jarvis Brook at the Holbrook Centre.
The visitors started
brightly, without creating any chances for themselves, and managed to
keep the game tight for the opening twenty minutes before George
Magnus opened the scoring with his first of four for the day. Darren
James' delightful through ball over the visitors' defence allowed
Magnus to run onto the pass without breaking his stride and left him
one on one with the goalkeeper, neatly passing the ball into the
corner of the goal, low to the 'keeper's left.
Eight minutes later Joe
Giacomelli chipped the ball forward, enabling Magnus to avoid the
offside trap and score his second before an opportunist cross from the
left from Matthew Rance floated over everyone in the eighteen yard
area and, unfortunately for the Jarvis defence, rebounded off the goal
post and into the goal via one of their defenders.
With ten minutes still
left to play in the first half, the Hornets were taking full control
and, when Patrick O’Sullivan let fly from the edge of the penalty area
with one of his piledrivers, the goalkeeper found it too hard to
handle and the ball looped high into the Jarvis goal to take the lead
to four. The best goal of the game came only two minutes later and
completed Magnus’ hat-trick. From all of twenty five yards, George
controlled the ball, turned and let fly with a beautiful left foot
volley into the top corner of the goal, a goal that he would have been
proud of with his right foot let alone his left.
With the second half under
way, Magnus scored his fourth and Horsham’s sixth from a corner which
the Jarvis 'keeper was unable to hold onto. This allowed Horsham to
change things around a bit, with the defenders being allowed centre
stage up front and the strikers performing defensive duties, under the
leadership of a once again outstanding Sam Lee. The final goal of the
game saw Giacomelli score his first ever goal for the club when a
measured through ball from O’Sullivan left Joe one on one with the
'keeper and he neatly passed the ball into the back of the net from
the edge of the area. Anthony Dumbrill came close to increasing the
lead which would have been his first of the season but he was denied
by the post after a terrific solo run.
Horsham's quarter-final
opponents will be the winners of the Lindfield Juniors v Withdean
Youth 2000 tie and will take place on 13th January.
