Matt Bulley’s Horsham side hosted
Hailsham United Juniors in the 4th round of the County Cup and were
nearly off to a perfect start when a shot by George Hall went narrowly
wide. Having pushed forward for a 5th minute free kick, Horsham were
penalised when the clearance resulted in a 3 on 1 break with the
Hailsham striker calmly claiming the lead.
With the young Hornets looking a bit
rattled for 5 minutes it took Marcus Collier to retrieve a poor
Hailsham goal kick, his pass to David O’Callaghan resulting in a shot
on goal which Hall managed to deflect past the 'keeper. The resulting
goal settled the nerves and, on 11 minutes, Horsham took the lead when
a Matt Clarke cross was tapped in by Hall for his second.
Hall saw a chance for his hat trick
cleared off the line, after the ball was played square across the 6yd
box by Collier, and that was to be Hall’s last action of the half as
he was replaced by Josh Clack.
Despite heavy pressure, and several good
chances, Horsham were unable to extend their lead and went into the
interval 2 – 1 up.
The second half started with sustained
pressure by the Hornets and, almost immediately, a quick throw in by
Stuart Chester found Louis Masih in space and his cross was blasted
home by O’Callaghan to extend their lead. Ten Minutes into the half,
Hall returned to replace Masih and, 4 minutes later, Ryan Wotton came
on for Daryl Jeeves. It was all Horsham pressure in the second half
with Hailsham relegated to lunging tackles to try and stop them.
In the 53rd minute, a shot by Clarke was
parried by the 'keeper and Wotton pounced to tap in. Three minutes
later the game was sealed when a cross from the right by O’Callaghan
was headed home by Clack.
The remaining time saw the Horsham
defence hold solid and Horsham dominate the play, this result takes
the young Hornets into the Quarter finals for the 3rd successive year.
