After last week's County Cup success Matt Bulley’s team were looking
to strengthen their position in the league when they travelled to
second place Fishergate Flyers.
With Fishergate only able to field 10 players it wasn’t surprising
that Horsham took an early lead when George Hall tried to chip the
'keeper who managed a save only to be beaten by Dan Petchey's
acrobatics that saw his overhead kick opening the scoring.
Not to be outdone Stuart Chester tried the same trick from a corner
but, this time, the shot went wide. The next 30 minutes saw almost
constant pressure and several good chances but the Young Hornets were
thwarted until almost the last minute of the half when persistence
from Josh Clack was rewarded after he battled his way through and shot
low and hard to finally extend the Horsham lead. Goldsmith had come on
in the 25th minute for Jeeves
The second half started with 2 changes, Chester and Collier were off
and Wotton and Case came on to replace them.
The start of the half saw a continuation of Horsham having the bulk of
the play and Fishergate trying to get something on the break and Hall,
Petchey, David O’Callaghan and Clack all had chances in the next 20
minutes without success. The players were again rotated and at this
point and Flyers had their first shot on goal, followed by their last
2 minutes later, although they did produce 2 fine saves from Kieran
Towse.
The last five minutes saw 3 goals for the Hornets. Firstly Clack,
again battling hard in the box, shot into the roof of the net and then
a minute later his header from a corner hit the bar and rebounded in
off his legs. Not to be outdone, O’Callaghan had a Fishergate
clearance rebound off his legs and fly past the stranded keeper to
seal the tie 5–0.
This win moves Horsham 7 points clear of Fishergate and still with 2
games in hand.
The next match is a trip to Felpham
Colts Youth
in the league.
